Interview: How I got my agent via Twitter

Anyone that’s been following my writing journey probably knows two undeniable truths about my so-far-success:

  1. My boyfriend’s iPhone X has portrait mode and I’m not afraid to use it
  2. I owe a tremendous amount of my success to a contest on twitter known as #DVPit

#DVPit, short for Diversity Pitch, is fairly new twitter phenomenon; a pitching contest that gives marginalized writers a chance to tweet project pitch to agents and editors interested in uplifting underrepresented stories/voices. It’s organized by The Astounding Beth Phelan, and it marks a major turning point in my own publishing career. It’s the contest that not only taught me how to pitch my book, but also got me into the inboxes of some incredible people.

One of these people is my now-agent Veronica Park, who I adore. Recently Beth Phelan asked us to sit down for an interview about our #DVpit meet-cute. You can read the full interview on the #DVPit site. This is my first ever interview about my writing and…it went about as well as you might suspect. I had the fullest intentions of using this to brand myself as a serious writer who effortlessly delivers glimmering insights and subversive perspectives.

AND THIIIIS:

I fully realize that this might read as though I’m trivializing my own work and success. I’m not. I swear I’m not. I take all of this very seriously. Please no one get mad at me for trying to be funny in front of Beth Phelan, and on the internet. It’s all the joy I have left.

And also you have to admit, Sailor Venus would make an incredible literary agent. I’m NOT wrong about this. Just LOOK:
